Great things about Cyprus

holidaying in cyprusSome great things to know about Cyprus

Climate

Cyprus is renowned for having a wonderful moderate climate.  In summer the months from late May to October are hot.  October to December is a lovely time in Cyprus with the average temperature ranging from 27 degrees to 16.  The coldest and wettest months tend to be January and February though the temperature still averages 17 degrees.  This makes Cyprus an ideal destination for many sports, and is one of the few places in the world where in winter you can ski up in the Troodos mountains and an hour later be sunbathing on a beach with a long cool drink. Cyprus truly has something for everyone.

Sports and Things to do

Golf

The interest in golf in Cyprus has grown greatly over recent years.  The islands great climate makes it a perfect destination for players of all abilities.  At present the island has five courses with many others planned.

Tennis

Tennis is another sport that greatly benefits from the moderate climate in Cyprus.  The tennis courts in Cyprus tend to be clay or hard court surfaces.  They can be found in all major towns and hotel complexes, the general public can usually use them for a nominal fee.

Sailing as you would expect from an island community is very popular.  Summer winds tend to be gentle in the morning and increase with the heat of the day.  There are many beach sites that rent crafts as well as hotels.  The Cyprus Yachting Association oversees all official racing and training on the island.  Full information can be obtained from the Cyprus tourist organization.

Scuba Diving

Cyprus and the Larnaca area are world famous for the diving of the Zenobia ferry wreck.  The wreck is regarded as one of the best wreck dives in the world. The Cyprus Dive Centre Association is the official administration.

Mountain Biking

Cyprus is criss-crossed with tracks and trails ideally suited to mountain biking.  They vary from free flowing forest trails to difficult single track routes.  Guides are available on a daily basis from many companies.  The advantage of having a guide is that not all the trails are marked and it may save you time or getting lost!  The guide will also carry spares for bikes and will have contact to get help if a problem may arise.

Walking

To discover the whole of the island on foot in one week is not possible as the island has so much to offer and is quite diverse.  There are many sites to see ranging from beautiful mountain villages in the Troodos region to Byzantine Monasteries and churches either nestled on mountain tops or in deep secluded valleys.  If you are looking for a walking holiday that has something different look no further than Cyprus.

Skiing in the Troodos

Ski in the morning, dive and sunbathe in the afternoon. Yes it's true, in Cyprus this is possible. Troodos ski resort is only a leisurely one hour drive from golden sands of the coast.  The season runs from December to April with ski hire and ski school available.  It is not somewhere you would come to just ski, but if you want a holiday where you can play golf, tennis, water ski or snow ski, to name but a few, then Cyprus is the island for you.
